In the early 1990s, the Christchurch Civic Crèche became the centre of one of New Zealand’s most notorious child abuse cases. Childcare worker Peter Ellis was convicted amid extraordinary allegations involving satanic rituals and abuse.
Ellis spent seven years in prison and maintained his innocence until his death in 2019. In 2022, New Zealand’s Supreme Court quashed his remaining convictions, finding a substantial miscarriage of justice.
This series explores the case, the investigation, and the questions that remain about how such extraordinary allegations became a criminal conviction.
